Terminal A Roadwork to Affect Passengers and Drivers
Beginning Tuesday morning this week, major construction in the road directly in front of Terminal A will affect traffic on Airport roadways through the summer months. Over the course of the summer, roadway lanes and pedestrian access to the terminal will move several times. Please be especially alert to changing road conditions.

To help traffic during this period of construction, we’ve opened a temporary detour that will let drivers heading to Terminal C to bypass Terminal A. This will shorten the loop for drivers going to Terminal C and reduce traffic in front of Terminal A until completion of this work in early October. Although we expect the detour bypass will be popular with drivers, we’ll have to close it this fall to allow the rest of our construction on the roads and the garage to continue.
The good news is that when the roadwork is completed in late 2010, we’ll have a new, permanent bypass road opened that will let you go directly to the new Terminal B.

During the first stage of the Terminal A road work this month, we’re closing the lanes right in front of the International Arrivals Building, just south of Terminal A. This will shift drivers to the other side of the road at that point. Starting Thursday morning, pedestrians walking from Terminal C to Terminal A will have to cross the street at that point and use the pedestrian bridge from the garage to enter the terminal.
To help speed the completion of the work and to minimize impacts on customers, construction crews will be working 24 hours a day, six days a week. Demolition of sections of the existing Terminal A road will take place Tuesday and Wednesday nights this week.

Pedestrian Access to the Airport Closed at Skyport Blvd. and Airport Parkway
Because of road construction, we’ve had to close pedestrian access to the Airport at both Skyport Blvd. and Airport Parkway. With the amount of construction traffic and the major work on the roads themselves, there isn’t any practical way for pedestrians to walk to the terminals during this period of major changes. When construction is done and the new roadway is completed in late 2010, there will be crosswalks that will offer better pedestrian access.
Passengers on foot continue to have the option of using the free VTA Line 10 bus, the “Airport Flyer,” that stops at locations near the Metro light rail station on North First Street, Technology Drive, and Airport Parkway just prior to entry to the Airport, as well as from the Santa Clara Caltrain station. The Airport Flyer route and information can be found at www.vta.org/schedules/SC_10.html.
Big Concrete Pour for New Garage to Take Place Wednesday Morning
We’ll be making a major concrete pour this Wednesday morning, starting about 5:00 a.m., as part of the construction of the foundations of the new rental car and public parking garage. Crews will place about 1,700 cubic yards of concrete for a “pile cap” that’s nearly 200 feet long and between 26 and 40 feet wide. This will require about 175 truckloads of concrete to be delivered at a rate of one every two to three minutes over a period of approximately five hours.
This will be the single largest concrete pour for the entire Airport project. All the concrete trucks will enter the construction site from Coleman Avenue and will exit via Airport Blvd. Traffic control will regulate the exiting of the trucks to minimize impacts on Airport Blvd during the pour.
Construction Photos Posted on Airport Website
Photos showing the fast progress on the Airport’s roadways and new rental car garage have been posted on the Airport’s website, www.sjc.org/improvement/060908_photos/index.htm. Thanks go to San Jose senior roadways architect David Mathiasmaier for taking many of these great shots of building The New Airport.
Airport Construction "Hot Line" (408) 501-0630
For current information about construction impacts to the airport, call (408) 501-0630. We will update the recorded message to help our passengers as we make changes affecting roads, terminals, and parking at SJC over the next two years.
Construction Schedules are Subject to Change
Because the $1.3 billion project to replace and upgrade the SJC terminal area is complex and moving very fast, our construction schedules are subject to continuing revision. We will keep updating the public and our customers about the project details as they occur, but please bear with us as we adjust schedules for the project over the next two years. We appreciate your patience, and thank you for flying San José while we build The New Airport for you.
